Comic #1914

1 Wendy: 'n' eight paces from the big tree. Here be it. Dig.
2 Ponsonby: This is intolerable. You can't go around giving us orders.
3 Ponsonby: What would your father, the Governor of Jamaica, say if he were here now?
4 Wendy: He be an earl. He'd be puttin' ye in yer place 'n' tellin' ye not to be talkin' back to a lady o' breedin'. Now dig!

An earl is the British equivalent of a count. The name is an Anglo-Saxon cognate of the Scandinavian word jarl, meaning a chieftan. Interestingly, there is no feminine equivalent of the title, and the wife of an earl is called a countess.
