Comic #596

1 {scene: outside Hogwarts}
1 Dumbledore: I'm afraid, Professor Steve, I'm going to have to let you go.
2 Steve: Crikey! I haven't shown these kids half the critters I planned to!
3 Dumbledore: Leave the list with me and I'll make sure the next Care of Magical Creatures teacher covers them.
4 Steve: Okay... well, there's one more species of Australian croc, two from Africa, some Asian crocs, and two American. Then there's alligators...

There are 14 species of crocodile. Two are native to Australia, three to Africa, four to the Americas, and the remaining five species are distributed throughout south and south-east Asia. The related but different alligator family has eight species, seven of which are American, and one Asian. Gavials form a separate family containing just the one species, native to the Indian subcontinent.

Geographic distribution maps show that the three crocodilian families are mainly restricted to tropical and subtopical regions around the world. Crikey!

2013-09-24 Rerun commentary: Hmmm. I think I've said about all I can about crocodiles and their kin. At least without doing some more research. Except to say that they have been around since the age of the dinosaurs.

Oh, and Ptolemaic Egypt actually had a city called Crocodilopolis. I kid you not.
