I know a guy who still programs in FORTRAN, by the way. Actually, I probably know several. FORTRAN 77, I mean*. "Conservative" is not the word to describe astronomers' approach to programming their data analysis code. More like "mummified".
* Apparently there have been Fortran 90, 95, 2003, and 2008 since! They even changed the ALL-CAPS spelling!
