2023-11-26 Rerun commentary: Sages are supposed to be wise and knowledgeable, but predicting the future isn't actually one of their usual skills. So this joke doesn't quite work if you examine it closely, but it's good enough if you squint and tilt your head a bit.

One meaning of "sage" you didn't link to is the Hindu rishi (generally translated "sage"), who (according to the Puranas and other Hindu texts) were semi-divine beings who could and did challenge the very gods, presumably therefore capable of predicting the future.
