Sometimes when I visit a foreign city I like to just wander. Pick a direction that looks interesting, and re-evaluate every so often. Take a wending route through areas that aren't planned, not knowing what you'll run across. You can discover some real gems this way. Local places that tourists don't go to, where the food is often excellent and the people friendly.
