It's often said that you can communicate with alien intelligences by starting with simple mathematical principles to establish a common baseline. I'm not sure exactly how you build up from 1+1=2 (or 1+1=10 in binary notation, as Jane Goodall demonstrates here) to the existence of cronuts and J-pop and Internet memes.
I expect it'd take a heck of a long time.
