There have been grand plans to build a railway the length of Africa, from Cape Town to Cairo, since the 19th century. Unfortunately, African colonial and post-colonial politics being what it is, this plan never came to fruition, and there remains a large uncompleted section between the railway networks of the northern continent and that of the southern half of Africa.
