Some people do in fact eat the pollen collected by bees. It seems to be one of those fad foods with an ill-founded reputation for being "natural" and "healthy", so that unscrupulous producers can market it for ridiculous prices and make money off it. It's mostly sugars and proteins, so has some nutritional value as a source of energy, but any other alleged benefits seem to be hype.
I wonder if you fed bees Vegemite instead of nectar, what sort of honey they'd produce...
