The wood-burning submarine refers to this episode of Casey and Andy.
Nikola Tesla was an inventor best known for developing the principles of the modern AC electricity grids used to deliver power to residences and businesses, and for his rivalry with fellow electrical inventor Thomas Edison. Tesla was, alas, also treading the line between eccentric and genuinely insane, if not over it.
