I looked up the lyrics to Circle of Life (warning: lyrics website, expect pop-ups and other annoying things; you don't need to click, I've reproduced the relevant bits below) to find out what the Zulu lyrics at the beginning of the song mean:
Nants ingonyama bagithi baba [there comes a lion]
Sithi uhhmm ingonyama [oh yes, it's a lion]
Nants ingonyama bagithi baba [there comes a lion]
Sithi uhhmm ingonyama [oh yes, it's a lion]
Ingonyama
Siyo nqoba [we're going to conquer]
Ingonyama
Ingonyama nengw' enamabala [it's a lion and a tiger]
[repeats 5]
Ingonyama nengw' enamabala (se-to-kwa!)
Ingonyama nengw' enamabala (asana)
Wait. "It's a lion and a tiger"? Tigers live in Asia. Specifically, in India and south-east Asia[1]. Nowhere near Africa. Tigers have never lived in Africa.
Tim Rice, you have a lot to answer for.
EDIT: I have been informed by readers that other lyrics sites translate that line as "it's a lion and a leopard", which certainly makes a lot more sense. Tim Rice, you have my apologies! Lyrics site, you have a lot to answer for!
Also, now I think about it, it would be rather odd for Zulu to even have a word for "tiger" (unless it was a fairly recent introduction to the language). It's exactly as odd as if Navajo had a word for "kangaroo".
[1] And north-east Asia. Which is even further from Africa, so it's not a disaster that I missed it.
