Oh dear. That really is a tragedy.
Imagine this scenario: A runaway trolley is hurtling along a track towards five immobile people. You can divert the trolley onto another track by pulling a lever, but on the other track is a nicely laid out afternoon tea. If the trolley hits it, the tea will spill onto the biscuits, making them soggy. Do you pull the lever???
I always find the trolley problem amusing because here in Australia the most common use of the word "trolley" is for a supermarket trolley - the thing you push down the aisles of a supermarket and put your shopping into. So I always envision a runaway shopping trolley. It would have been much better if the originator had named it the "tram problem", or even the "train problem".
