Taxes go back to at least the earliest Ancient Egyptian dynasties. The Rosetta Stone, dating several thousand years later, is actually a recording of a decree on taxation by Pharaoh Ptolemy V.

So next time you think taxes are don't achieve anything, remember that they achieved the deciphering of the Egyptian hieroglyphic writing system, and with it virtually everything we know about Ancient Egypt.
