I don't think I really realised just how cold water could be until one time when I was on a camping trip with some university friends in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. We stopped off at Jenolan Caves for a bit, and there is a small reservoir there known as the Blue Lake.

It's not clear to me if it's still possible, but at the time you could go swimming in the lake. We decided that would be fun. Approximately one second after I'd jumped into the water I decided that it was no fun at all, and that I'd better get out as quickly as possible. I'm pretty sure that's the coldest I've ever felt in my life.

Fortunately we didn't have a Loch Ness Monster to worry about. Only bunyips.
