When growing up as a kid, rum balls were one of my favourite cake-like treats. They're a common sight in Australian bakeries and cake shops. I don't know how much rum they actually had in them, but it was never considered a problem to let kids have them.
There also seems to be a huge variance in rum ball recipes. I've always made them how my mother taught me, with crumbled, mashed sponge cake, bound with a little strawberry jam, and rolled in chocolate sprinkles. But looking online just now I see a lot of recipes using crushed biscuits, bound with sweetened condensed milk, and rolled in dried coconut.
Now I have a hankering for rum balls...
