Giolitti (English site) is possibly the best known gelateria in Rome. When I travelled to Rome in 2001, I visited their shop on Via degli Uffici del Vicario a number of times to enjoy the astoundingly good gelato.

And the really cool thing is, that shop was there in the 1930s, when this comic is set. How cool is it to think that I've had dessert from the same place that Dr Ginny Smith and Erwin have? (Assuming they actually get there, that is.)

2018-05-27 Rerun commentary: On the other hand, I didn't have a specific pasta restaurant in mind when I wrote this strip. Being near the centre of Rome, there are a lot of bad, tourist-oriented restaurants nearby, but there are also many hidden gems. I don't know of one on Via degli Uffici del Vicario itself, but if you're looking for somewhere good to eat dinner in central Rome I'll recommend:

• Obicà at Piazza di Firenze 28, just two minutes walk away from Giolitti (per Google Maps).
• Ristorante La Campana, Vicolo della Campana, 18. Four minutes walk from Giolitti.
• Ristorante Arancio D'oro, Via di Monte d'Oro, 17. Five minutes walk from Giolitti. Staff spoke virtually zero English when I was there, but highly recommended.
• Nonna Betta, Via del Portico d'Ottavia, 16. Fourteen minutes walk from Giolitti.
