I was all fired up to write an interesting annotation about whisky, until I remembered I've already done it.

I don't like whiskey anyway. There are several alcoholic drinks I do like, but I've never managed to get past my repugnance for the smell and taste of whisky.

2025-02-28 Rerun commentary: Well, there's an interesting change. Since this comic first went live, I have tried some whisky, and indeed developed a liking for it. I learnt that there are many different flavour and aroma profiles for whisky and deliberately chose to start with something at the very mild end of the spectrum: Glenmorangie 10 year old.

To my surprise I did in fact find it to be very light and very unlike my previous memories of whisky, which were gained second hand from my grandfather's preferences. I don't know what sort of whisky he drank, but it was definitely very different from Glenmorangie.

Long story short, I gained an appreciation for this very light, almost floral, style of whisky, and then branched out into other areas of the flavour map. Here's a sample whisky flavour map, courtesy of reddit users. You can see Glenmorangie near the bottom right corner. Since then I've experimented a little and gone as far as Highland Park 12, right near the middle. It has a stronger, maltier flavour, and is currently my favourite. I haven't ventured further left into heavily peated whisky, which I'm not entirely sure if I'll like or not. I suspect that's the area my grandfather was into. I'm more curious about the upper regions and might try something there next.

But trying whisky is a slow process. I think each bottle lasts me over a year.
