Hephaestus was the Greek god of craftsmen and blacksmiths, and by extension technology, and also of volcanoes. Having your armour forged by the god ofblacksmiths himself would usually be seen as a pretty good way to ensure that the armour would properly protect you.
Unfortunately, it didn't protect Achilles in the one place he really needed it.
