That's one of the things that's so good about sport. It really doesn't mean anything, in the greater scheme of things, but you can invest passion into it anyway. When your team wins, it feels great. When your team loses, it feels bad but - this is the important bit - that bad feeling isn't actually based on anything truly terrible like a natural disaster, or losing your job, or a family member falling ill.
Yes, sport is essentially meaningless. But that doesn't make it worthless. It is, in fact, one of the reasons why it's so great.
You're risking a bit of harmless "oh well, maybe next year" in return for a possible temporary euphoria and feeling on top of the world.
That's a bargain I like.
