As this comic goes live, I will have just arrived home from a week-long trip to San Francisco to present a paper at the Electronic Imaging 2013 conference. This means I have no time during the week to write up a new annotation, and am queuing this one up in advance.

I've been to San Francisco several times, and it's easily my favourite city in the USA. It's the place overseas where I feel most at home. It is in fact officially the first sister city of my own Sydney. I'll have a little bit of time to see friends and sightsee, but most of my time will be spent at the conference.

I'm looking forward to some sourdough bread. A decade ago sourdough was unknown here in Sydney. Now it's started popping up all over the place, but let me assure you, none of it tastes as good as sourdough from San Francisco. Interestingly, the species of bacterium that gives San Francisco sourdough its distinctive flavour is named Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis! How cool is that?

But the gist of what I'm saying today is that I don't have time to write up a full length annotation this week. I'll be in the City by the Bay, or as I tend to think of it, the City with the Other Bridge. Living in Sydney, "The Bridge" refers first and foremost to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge, which may actually be more famous in absolute terms, qualifies merely as "The Other Bridge". Sorry to all the San Franciscans out there. But I plan on paying my respects to the other bridge when I'm there during the week.
