I almost made the mistake of having Terry call the mites "mindless insects", but that very phrase triggered warning bells in my mind and I was wary enough to check. Mites are indeed arachnids, members of the eight-legged arthropod class that includes spiders, scorpions, ticks, and a few other weird critters.
Interestingly, the spider-like animals we commonly know as "daddy-longlegs" are not spiders. They are part of a distinct order of arachnids called Opiliones, whereas spiders are of the order Araneae.
