I originally wrote this as C++ code, but every programmer I showed it to said, "No, you should use Perl in that punchline."
Perl does kind of have a reputation as the least readable mainstream programming language, although there are some proponents of APL or Haskell. The "mainstream" is important, because there's the whole field of esoteric programming languages, many of which are way harder to read than Perl. (And I should know, I've written a bunch of them.)
