This strip was inspired by the photography lab at my last job. We wanted to be able to do optics experiments, so stray light is your biggest enemy - so we had every surface in the room painted black. Not Vantablack, but a standard matte black paint.
But walking around in there was a bit like this. Not so bad that you'd walk into a wall, but it was certainly disorienting and it was amazing just how difficult it was to get enough light onto something to see it properly. In a normal room, the light bounces around off all the ceilings and walls. In the lab, even though there were bright ceiling lights, often things would be too dark to see properly, especially in corners and little nooks like inside the cupboards we had installed for storing things. Even though the room lights were on, you often had to use a torch to find anything inside a cupboard.
We tried to use the lab for the purpose of a photographic studio as well, but the black walls made it virtually impossible to light a subject properly. There's a very good reason why photo studios have white walls.
