1 Mike: We could help you look for Will—
1 Hopper: No.
2 Hopper: After school you go straight home. All of you. No biking around looking for your friend, no investigating.
3 Hopper: This isn’t some 1980s movie where the kids always figure out stuff before the adults.
4 Dustin: Damn, he’s got us there.

There's a strong tradition in fiction of kids investigating stuff and doing a better job than adults. Not only in 1980s movies such as E.T., The Goonies, and The Monster Squad, but also in book series such as The Three Investigators, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Encyclopedia Brown, among others. And not forgetting the Scooby-Doo gang.
Unfortunately there don't seem to be nearly as many kids going around solving mysteries in real life. I think more kids should definitely get into this line of work!
