To mount an interplanetary invasion, you need to have some modicum of intelligence. Or at least you'd think so.

In some sense the original War of the Worlds Martians were defeated by their own stupidity. H. G. Wells tries to justify their lack of knowledge about bacteria by saying that they long ago rid their own planet of all such sources of disease. But you'd think someone would remember.
