The shadow in the background is the shadow of a lamp post which I placed in the scene, but which ended up out of shot to the right in every photo. There's also another lamp post on the left, also out of shot, and for which no shadow is visible.
Aren't you glad I take so much care setting up important visual details in scenes like this?
