Comic #1397

1 Dr No: The Americans are fools. I offered my services, they refused. So did the East. Now they can both pay for their mistake.
2 Stud: World domination. The same old dream. Our asylums are full of people who think they're Napoleon. Or God.
3 Dr No: Call me mad?! They called King George III mad!
4 Stud: Er... he was mad...
4 Dr No: See what I mean!

King George III ruled Great Britain and Ireland (merged into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801) from 1760 to 1820. He is thus the second longest reigning British monarch (at least until Queen Elizabeth II overtakes him in a few years assuming she remains healthy). He is known in Britain for the insanity that struck him in his later years, forcing his son to act as regent throughout the last 9 years of his life. He is better known in the USA for being the monarch on the throne when the American Revolution occurred in the 1770s, and is remembered there for his unbending support for the taxation of the colonies which precipitated the revolt.

He was also the subject of the 1995 film The Madness of King George, which was based on a stage play titled The Madness of George III. Despite popular rumours that the title was changed to prevent "stupid" American audiences thinking that it was a sequel to two prior movies about some guy named George, that was not actually the case.

2016-06-25 Rerun commentary: Since this comic was originally published (in 2006), Queen Elizabeth II has indeed remained hale enough to surpass not only the reign of her great-great-great grandfather George III (59 years and 96 days), but also that of her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria (63 years, 216 days), to become the longest reigning British monarch ever.

That's a record that probably won't be broken again until a monarch downloads their brain into a robot and rules Britannia forever after!
