An earl is the British equivalent of a count. The name is an Anglo-Saxon cognate of the Scandinavian word jarl, meaning a chieftan. Interestingly, there is no feminine equivalent of the title, and the wife of an earl is called a countess.

2018-12-19 Rerun commentary: Some years later, when Governor Wenchgood returned to England, the King decided to reward him for his years of service as Governor of Jamaica. The King inducted him as a member of the Order of the British Empire, thus making him an earlOBE.^[1]
