Comic #2238

1 Yeti: Right. We have Cthulhu, and the Cheshire cat. And... who are you?
2 Isaac Newton: Isaac Newton, my good... thing. But what is this unspeakably hideous blasphemous entity?
3 Isaac Newton: It looks all wrong. As if its angles did not conform to the geometry of Euclid.
4 Isaac Newton: It's almost enough to make one want to take up mysticism and alchemy.

A lesser known fact about Isaac Newton is that he devoted much of his life to studies of alchemy and occultism. Imagine what he would have been able to achieve in the physical sciences if he'd spent that time on them instead.

Of course back in the 17th century it wasn't entirely clear that some of these things weren't sciences in themselves.

2022-01-08 Rerun commentary: Alternatively, imagine what could be if Newton had made similar breakthroughs in alchemy and mysticism as he did in physical science. We might live in a world where alchemy and mysticism were rigorous fields of study, with reproducible results and well-known underlying principles based on a foundation of mathematics.

There are some fictional worlds kind of like this. It's an interesting way to build a setting.
