I must confess I've never been brave enough to attempt The Silmarillion. I found the Lord of the Rings hard going enough, and everyone I've heard discuss The Silmarillion has said it's even tougher.

2023-03-31 Rerun commentary: I've since acquired a copy of The Silmarillion. I found it a few years ago in one of those "take a book, leave a book" mini street library things that have popped up everywhere in the last decade, and I grabbed it. (I didn't have a book with me to leave at the time, but I've given many books into other street libraries at other times.)

Still haven't read it though.
