Of course keeping track of time while travelling through space in a universe which includes Einsteinian relativity is problematic to begin with.

Add all those other things and and it gets really tricky.

I wonder if the far future will have something equivalent to the Board of Longitude to offer prizes to the first person to figure out a practical method of measuring time in space.


2025-02-02 Rerun commentary: One interesting thing about the original Star Trek was they invented the Stardate method of tracking time (parodied in the above comic). But then they went and abused it by having the episodes appear in non-chronological order. If you watch them in the intended season ordering, the Stardates jump back and forth. It doesn't actually matter much because the show is episodic and has virtually zero continuity, but it's still a bit irksome for those who pay attention to the numbers to discover that you're watching the episodes in the wrong order in-universe.
