Seriously. I'm amazed there weren't more horrible dance floor accidents in the 1970s.

Dance floors need to have the right amount of slipperiness. Too slippery makes it difficult and dangerous, but no slip at all also makes it hard to dance properly, as some amount of foot sliding is usually required. In fact dance floors are usually a little bit slipperier than more general purpose flooring.

You also generally want a sprung floor, that provides some elasticity and give, to absorb the energy of footfalls and provide some bounce to movements. Interestingly, a new trend in some dance clubs is to mount piezoelectric generators in the flooring, which generate power as dancers bounce around on the floor.
