This refers to the Everybody Laughs Ending. Particularly common in 1960s, 70s, and 80s TV series. Even drama series when it would be totally inappropriate for the main characters to laugh because someone - or even hundreds or in some cases millions of people have died. See the original series of Star Trek and Blake's 7 for some examples.
