I'm still amused that pet shops in Australia actually bother selling catnip toys. Domestic cats in Australia virtually all come from stock with the genetic make-up that renders them insensitive to the effects of catnip. And new genetic diversity is almost never introduced because of Australia's quarantine laws. (If you move to Australia and want to bring a pet cat, the cat must stay at a quarantine station for six months. Most people don't want to go through this with their pets.) Wikipedia says that around a third of all cats are insensitive to catnip, and that sensitivity is hereditary. This includes almost every cat in Australia.

The other consequence of this is that I've never witnessed a cat reacting to catnip.
