Comic #4909

1 Death of Insanely Overpowered Fireballs: HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN AN ALCHEMICAL SHOPKEEPER?
2 Shopkeeper: No, I used to tell fortunes for a living. But I had one client who tried card counting to get a better fortune.
3 Shopkeeper: He waited until only good cards were left in the deck. But then I dealt them all upside down!
4 Shopkeeper: Ended up predicting him being banned by all psychics in the country.

Inspired by a conversation with my friends, after I asked what would happen if someone tried counting cards during a Tarot reading.

Unlike modern playing cards, Tarot cards are oriented, so you can tell if they are the "right way up" or "inverted". The difference is of crucial importance for a Tarot reading. A card dealt in the upright position takes on its usual mystical meaning, but a card dealt in an inverted position is usually interpreted as being the opposite of the conventional meaning, or a sort of dark reflection.

For this reason, when diviners are shuffling Tarot cards they frequently turn half the deck around, so that the orientations of the cards are randomised.
