2013-07-10 Rerun commentary: It's a pretty obvious gag, and I wouldn't at all be surprised if somebody did it before me.
The gaping pit Luke is dangling over is actually just a black clipboard, on which the LEGO set is directly placed. You can see diffuse reflections in its surface and a slight gradation of colour. A very cheap effect but mostly pretty effective. (Until I point out how it's done and it becomes so obvious that you can't unsee it any more.)
