1 Luke: {flying his X-wing fighter} Biggs, Wedge, let's close it up. We're going in. We're going in full throttle.
1 Biggs: {over the radio} Luke, at that speed will you be able to pull out in time?
2 Luke: It'll be just like Beggar's Canyon back home. Pop the ailerons, bank into the turns...
3 Biggs: {over the radio} Luke, you dweeb! You can't manoeuvre like that! There's no air out there!

2013-08-28 Rerun commentary: I made this strip just so I could use the cool new LEGO X-wing that I'd recently acquired at the time.
There is, by the way, a potential in-universe justification for why spaceships in Star Wars manoeuvre as though they are in an atmosphere: banking into turns and doing various other things that require some sort of resistant medium through which they fly. (As opposed to space, in which a ship can fly just as well sideways or backwards as forwards, given some propulsion in the right direction, since there's no air to get in the way.) You can posit that the wings of X-wings and TIE fighters are actually generating powerful magnetic fields, and they fly through the magnetic fields of various planets and other objects (like giant metal space stations), using the resistance generated by their magnetic wings to provide the same sort of aerodynamic manoeuvrability that you get from real wings pushing through air.
I don't think this is particularly plausible, but I have seen it bandied about as a theory.
