Colonel Haken conveniently forgets to mention a few things like the Chinese, Mongol, Inca, Aztec, and I'm sure a few other empires or empire-like civilisations.
I've been swimming in Germany. It would definitely be a nicer place to swim if they had a Mediterranean shore.
