2013-02-15 Rerun commentary: After all this time I'm not sure where I got the photo background for panel 1 from. It looks like a real tepui, though.

And yes, the machetes that they used to hack through the jungle have full basket hand guards.

EDIT: And of course a reader has managed to find the original image: So definitely Venezuelan.
